What are the button box idle animations, and how do I change them?

Since plugin 7.1 a button box can animate while no game is running. The controls are on Daniel Newman Racing > Button Boxes, on the Idle Theme tab, in the row headed Idle Animation just under the theme bar: a Style and a Speed.

The styles are Off, Breathe, Wave, Ripple, Twinkle, Bounce, Edge Chase, Theatre Chase, Alternate, Wipe and Blocks, a falling-pieces animation that stacks and clears rows. Speed is Normal, Slow or Fast. Off is the default, so a box you have never changed sits exactly as it always did.

It always keeps your colours. The animation only changes how bright each button is, never what colour it is, so the box always shows the Idle Theme you chose above it, whether that is Custom, Rainbow, Tokyo, Gulf or any other theme. Buttons fade down to a low glow and back up rather than switching off.

The picture of your box is the preview. Pick a style and the drawing on the page plays it live, exactly as the box will.

Worth knowing:

  • It runs only when you are not in a session, on the desktop or in menus. In the game your Game Theme and effects take over as normal.
  • The animation follows your Mounting setting, so a Wipe on a box mounted at 90 degrees runs the way the box is actually turned.
  • The Pokornyi MCP Encoder Box and Ignition Box have no grid of buttons, so they offer Breathe, Twinkle, Theatre Chase and Alternate. Any other style on those two breathes.
  • It is part of the 7.1 Button Box Profile. If the row is missing or does nothing, update the plugin to 7.1 or later and make sure the box is running the Button Box Profile rather than an older per-box file.
