A free STEM programme from Daniel Newman Racing. We bring a racing simulator to schools, colleges and youth organisations in and around Ipswich, and use it to show young people what those four subjects actually let you do.

Maths

It is pointless.

Until it is the difference between winning and losing a race, measured in tenths of a second.

Until it explains the grip, the forces and the physics holding a car on the road.

Technology

It is not for me.

Until they write a simple piece of logic, watch it control real hardware, and think: I could do this.

Young people cannot be inspired by opportunities they do not know exist, and not every child has the same access to technology, motorsport or the experiences that might spark that interest. Futures exists to close some of that gap, starting in our own community.

The Programme

A racing simulator, brought to your building, at no cost to you

Futures is an interactive STEM programme built around a dedicated racing simulator that we take out into the community. Young people get to race it, and racing is the hook. What we do with what they have just felt is the programme.

Completely free of charge
Daniel Newman Racing provides the time, the software, the simulator and the delivery. There is no cost to the school, the college or the group, and there is nothing to buy afterwards.
We bring it to you
The simulator travels. Nobody has to book a coach, arrange a trip or find a budget for one, which is usually the point at which an opportunity like this quietly disappears.
Built for groups, not for one child at a time
Schools, colleges, youth organisations, and careers and community events. Racing is what draws a group in, and the session is written so the people watching get as much from it as the person driving.

Where it runs

Futures is a United Kingdom programme. It starts in one town and grows outward from there, one tier at a time.

Inside A Session

Racing is the hook. This is the lesson.

We use what they have just experienced to take the whole thing apart. Six steps, and every one of them is a school subject wearing a crash helmet.

    The hook

    They race it

    Every session opens with the thing they actually turned up for. A lap of a real circuit in a real racing simulator, with the wheel loaded up in their hands and the pedals under their feet.

    Physics

    The car is solved in real time

    Grip, weight transfer, downforce, tyre temperature. The car underneath them is not a video. It is a physics problem being answered continuously, and we show them the part of it they just felt through the wheel.

    Maths and data

    Everything they did becomes numbers

    Speed, engine revs, steering angle, cornering forces, tyre temperatures, the gap to their own last lap. What their hands just did arrives as telemetry, and it is the same kind of data a professional team reads.

    Software

    A rule decides what those numbers mean

    Numbers on their own say nothing. Somebody has to write the line that says when this value passes that one, do this. They write one. It runs. That is software development, and it took about a minute to learn.

    Electronics and design

    Real hardware answers back

    The rule they wrote lights an LED on the wheel, redraws a dashboard or pushes back through the steering. Code stops being an abstraction the moment it moves something physical in the room they are sitting in.

    Engineering

    They go again, and they are quicker

    Now there is a reason to care what the numbers said. Measure, understand, change one thing, measure again. That loop is engineering, and they will have done it before anyone tells them what it is called.

Suddenly we are talking about physics, maths, software development, data, electronics, design and engineering. The difference is that now there is a reason to want to understand them.

Access

Opportunity is not evenly distributed

Motorsport and high end technology are expensive, and for plenty of families they are simply out of reach. There are young people a few miles from here who will never otherwise sit in front of equipment like this, let alone find out what sits behind it.

So rather than waiting for them to find the opportunity, we are taking the opportunity to them.

    It is free, and it stays free

    Daniel Newman Racing pays for the time, the software and the simulator. There is nothing to pay before, nothing to buy afterwards, and nobody is going to be sold anything.

    No equipment and no head start needed

    You do not need a computer suite, a motorsport club, a technology budget or a single young person who already follows racing. Everything the session runs on arrives with us.

    It goes to where they already are

    Into the school, the college, the youth group or the community event. Nobody has to fund a coach or arrange a trip, which is usually the exact point where an opportunity like this quietly stops being possible.

    The same session, whoever is in the seat

    A young person whose family could buy a racing rig tomorrow and a young person who has never touched one get exactly the same session, the same equipment and the same attention.

Why We Are Doing It

It began with a boy in Ipswich who hated maths and science

Daniel Newman Racing Futures, the free STEM programme

Daniel Newman Racing started in Ipswich and has grown into a global brand, with technology now used around the world, including by real life professional racing drivers. But it began with a boy who absolutely loved motorsport. Racing cars, technology and anything with an engine.

Maths and science? He hated them. There is a certain irony in looking at the company he went on to build and realising its foundations are the very subjects he had so little interest in at school. Science. Technology. Engineering. Maths. They are behind the software, the data and the technology DNR creates every single day.

Perhaps the problem was not that I hated those subjects. Perhaps I just had not discovered what they could allow me to do.

There could be another fourteen or fifteen year old sitting in a classroom in Ipswich today who loves motorsport but thinks maths and science are not for them. We understand that kid rather well.

We are only at the beginning

Futures is being built in the open rather than unveiled finished. Here is exactly how far along it is, so nobody has to guess.

  2. Writing the session

    Done

    The session is designed: what happens, in what order, and which part of it is quietly teaching what. We build telemetry and driver interface software for a living rather than lesson plans, so it was shaped alongside people who teach for one.

  3. Bringing partners in

    In progress

    Talking to companies across motorsport, sim racing and technology, and to local businesses here in Ipswich and Suffolk, about helping bring it to life.

  4. Building the simulator

    In progress

    A dedicated rig, specified for a room full of people and for the back of a van, rather than for one driver at home. It has to survive being moved, set up quickly and be usable by somebody who has never sat in one.

  5. The first sessions

    Next
